Is Jose Baez Too Famous to Seat an Unbiased Jury?

16 Feb

In late 2010, the legal defense team for Casey Anthony requested extra funds from the state of Florida to secure the release of transcriptions from the depositions of the Oakridge Laboratory experts which were taken in Tennessee.  The extra funds were needed because the transcription service utilized by the defense team refused to accept the rates established by the JAC.  During court hearings and in court documents, the defense team presented the transcription company as tricksters who initially agreed to accept the JAC payment schedule, then changed their minds once payment became due.

The owner of the transcription service company, Gerald Tyke Stogsdill, does not accept this characterization of his actions and decisions by Jose Baez and Cheney Mason.  He wrote a letter to Judge Perry which included the e-mail chain between his company and the offices of Mr. Baez and Mr. Mason.  His letter and attachments may be found at the following link.

“I had Sara look over our upcoming and past appointments to see whether we had done or were going to be doing any work for Michelle Medina and/or anybody named Baez or some connection to The Baez Law Firm.  Nothing could be connected to those names.  Sara asked each reporter with my office whether those names meant anything to them.  Nobody could recall ever dealing with a “Medina” nor a “Baez”.  I verified as best I could through Sara that we had not signed any contract.  It appeared to be something that could wait until I returned from vacation.  In light of the fact that at least once a month we get a request to fill out forms to facilitate payment of an invoice that had already been sent, it didn’t seem to be urgent.”

“I had Sara look over our upcoming and past appointments to see whether we had done or were going to be doing any work for Michelle Medina and/or anybody named Baez or some connection to The Baez Law Firm.  Nothing could be connected to those names.” – The names “Baez” and “The Baez Law Firm” are unknown to Mr. Stogsdill even though he interacts daily with legal professionals.

“Sara asked each reporter with my office whether those names meant anything to them.  Nobody could recall ever dealing with a “Medina” nor a “Baez”.” – The name “Baez” is meaningless to an office full of court reporters.

“I verified as best I could through Sara that we had not signed any contract.” – Mr. Stogsdill did not sign a contract with Mr. Baez.

“It appeared to be something that could wait until I returned from vacation.” – The concerns of Mr. Baez are of less importance to Mr. Stogsdill than his own vacation.  Mr. Baez if not more  important than other attorneys.

We have learned Mr. Baez failed to secure a contract with Mr. Stogsdill specifying payment at the JAC rates.

We have learned the name “Baez” does not entitle the bearer to special treatment or reduced rates by vendors.

We have learned despite constant national television appearances for more than two years, professionals connected to the legal industry are unaware of Mr. Baez, his defense of Casey Anthony, and his defense dream team.

In contrast to the picture used for the last article, the suit Mr. Baez wears is horrid, but at least his unbelievably awful tie is matched in equal awfulness by his hanky.

~Bullstopper~ Momma must have not dressed him for court the day the above pic was snapped.

Thanks for letting me know this is out there now as I do want to read it. This link does not work and I am unable to find the document on docstoc by searching.

If think what has happened is you have copied the link from another referencing site which auto-shortens the link – notice the … near the end.

Unfortunately, a straight copy paste won’t work with these types of links. However, you can copy by choosing “Copy Link Location”, then paste and it should work.

I always go to the site and then copy and paste the url. Much easier that way.

        Oh the clown suit. UGH!!!!

We have learned by looking at many pictures of Jose Baez that he doesn’t miss any meals

“Anthony has served 853 days in custody since her booking on October 14, 2008.”

    853 days = 121.86 Weeks = 2.34 years

Can someone please help me with the PDF files. For some reason I cannot open them. Thanks!

If the problem is really the pdf files and not a bad address, you may need to install or re-install Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Yes, Obstruction of Justice applies to JB as well as both Anthonys……however, JB should apply for a spot
    on ‘WHAT NOT TO WEAR”……LOL

His tie and hanky stand out like sore thumbs but we all know how he wants to be noticed. Double LOL

Maybe when the trial is over, we can get Joan Rivers and the crew of Fashion Police to do a show on it. “Best dressed”, “worst dressed”, “Bitch Stole My Look”, “Make It Go Away” etc. on “E” the Entertainment Channel for the award shows!

      • Venice February 16, 2011 at 8:16 pm #

Oh God, don’t give him any ideas on a Baez reality show!!

      YES! LOL!

I am mildly offended by the discussions of the lawyers’ physical appearance. What they look like doesn’t matter. I myself am no beauty queen nor fashionista (to the contrary, I somewhat resemble Andrea Lyons) but my lawyering is first rate nonetheless.

The only reason I have ever mentioned Baez’ appearance is because he is obviously spending a pile of money on his clothing and coiffure. IMO this money would be better spent paying his experts to complete their reports, paying court reporters to transcribe deposition transcripts, and otherwise getting the defense case ready for the impending trial.

      I don’t know…

Seems to me a client should be mightily concerned about an attorney who can’t do something as simple as a daily living task of matching the color and patterns of their clothing. I would also be concerned about the appearance of my attorney as they now represent me in a public forum where looks do matter, regardless of statements to the contrary.

However, I would most likely have never mentioned the appearance of Jose Baez except for his constant television appearances and the way his level of clothing, in terms of style and cost, has improved drastically from the beginning days of the case.

I do think we can both agree a dusky orange pocket square does not match a purple polka-dotted tie and purple striped shirt. I think we can also agree the polka-dotted brown tie, matching pocket square, and brown plaid suit are of significantly inferior quality to his shimmery contemporary cut suits of late.

      • Katprint February 16, 2011 at 4:14 pm #

I agree that Baez’ wardrobe appears to have dramatically improved since the beginning of this case, presumably due to his spending Casey’s defense budget on it.

I also agree that it is important for professionals to look professional. I would be reluctant to have my blood drawn by a medical technician dressed like Marilyn Manson, for example, and I would be leery of having my car repaired by someone dressed like a doctor or lawyer.

However, I interpreted Kim’s comment, “We have learned by looking at many pictures of Jose Baez that he doesn’t miss any meals” as referring to Baez’ body shape. It is actually pretty common for competent attorneys to be overweight. For example, F. Lee Bailey and Johnny Cochran were both overweight while they were representing OJ Simpson in his double-murder trial. http://sportsmed.starwave.com/classic/2000/1121/photo/c_simpson7_i.jpg It is all too easy for a hardworking lawyer to develop a Dilbert-like figure.

OTOH, being overweight is no guarantee that an attorney will be either competent or hardworking. LOL!

he seems like a cheap bastard so i’m sure he found those at the goodwill store and thought he got a great looking tie and a bargain.

Bull-Glad you got those links. I just updated my Adope Reader but still couldn’t get the link to work. I copied the link info from THM. (shyloh-often times I can’t read the url so I will print out Motions if I can’t find a pdf copy).

I have worn the same “style” for 30 years. I’d hate for people to evaluate me on the clothes I wore but I am also willing to admit that clothes are important and people do notice. Andrea Lyon was bold in her approach to the color of her suits. Having Casey cry on her shoulder wearing a matching blouse was certainly memorable.

The link you originally posted will never work because of the “…” in the middle. However, it will probably work from the original place you copied it. This is because some of the forums and boards auto-replace a link with a modified link which shortens the physical space the link takes up so it will fit in the boxes. But this destroys the ability to copy/paste to elsewhere.

However, there are two options for those who love to post links, like myself.

      1) Right click on the link, choose “Copy Link Location”, then go to where you want to put the link, right click and choose “Paste”. The link should paste properly, but there is a possibility the forum or board not only modified the appearance of the link, they also added a bunch of internal referencing gobbilty gook to the beginning, causing the link to always run through the board first, then to the real target. This can cause the link not to work or be really slow.

      2) Go to the actual target page of the link, highlight the address bar which you can do with a single left click anywhere in the bar, copy, then paste where you want it. This is the best way as you neither manually type anything or depend on the formatting abilities of other boards or forums.

Assuming the links are working properly, for the PDF pages you should be getting to a page which loads a PDF window, then the actual document in the PDF window. If the link is not working, you will not even get the PDF window. If you get the PDF window, but the document won’t load, that is when you need to install/re-install Adobe Acrobat Reader and reboot.

If you are still having difficulties opening PDF documents from that point, you may have certain security features turned on in your Internet Explorer.

So you are a computer geek, a fine writer and Madison Avenues’ dream dresser. And me? I’m none of the above. I don’t turn off my computer so that I don’t have to relearn how to turn it on. You were great to write all that down. I’ll give it my best shot.

    Nevada-I couldn’t resist saying that.
